 P1 Fuse

Syllabus Summary Questions Answers

  1. The safety features of an electric kettle are the fuse and earth wire in the three pin plug.

  2. The hairdryer is safe to use without the earth wire because it has a double insulation (plastic

casing), this means no current will flow to earth if someone touches the case.

  3. When a large current flows through a fuse, it melts, this breaks the circuit and protects the

appliance and the person using it.

  4. Higher tier only:

A residual current circuit breaker detects any differences between the currents in the live and

      neutral wires.

  5. The correct fuse for each appliance from the available fuses (3A, 5A and 13A) is as follows:

Appliance Current through appliance (A)  Fuse rating (A)
 Kettle 10A 13A
 Fridge 9A 13A
 Toaster 4A 5A
 Hairdryer 1.5A 3A
